The Heart Behind Every ROOT Rescue Story

Welcome to ROOT Stories — a collection of some of the most meaningful moments from our rescue journey.

Every animal we help has a story, and while we have rescued many, some moments leave an especially lasting impact on our hearts. From helping community pets and supporting families in need, to going out into the field to rescue stray, abandoned, neglected, and owner-surrendered animals, these stories represent the heart of our mission.

Many of our ROOT pets come from difficult beginnings filled with uncertainty, fear, or hardship. But through rescue, compassion, medical care, and the support of our community, their stories often turn into the most heartwarming and beautiful endings.

These are the moments that remind us why rescue matters — and why every animal deserves a second chance.

Max was a senior boy who was surrendered to us suffering from severe dental disease. We gladly took him into our care and had him seen by a veterinarian right away. He underwent a dental cleaning and had 17 painful teeth extracted to help relieve his discomfort. We are so happy we were able to help Max become comfortable and pain-free again, and even happier knowing he is now spoiled and loved by his forever family.

A community family reached out to us looking to surrender a litter of chihuahua puppies. While we were happy to help the puppies find loving homes, we also wanted to help prevent this situation from happening again. We offered to cover and schedule mom’s spay surgery — yay, no more unwanted litters! Mom was able to stay with her loving family, and all of the puppies found amazing forever homes.

Snickers, the sweetest shy little girl, was surrendered to us after spending years being used for breeding countless litters. She arrived matted, filthy, and exhausted alongside her puppies. After receiving medical care, getting spayed, and being treated for ongoing health issues, she finally got the fresh start she deserved. We are so happy that Snickers and her last puppy, Willow, were adopted together by an amazing family who now spoils them with love every day.

Ivy came into our care after we received a call about an abandoned cat who was severely emaciated, to the point where her body had begun breaking down her own muscle just to survive. Through the care of her foster and our partnership with Ironbound Cats, Ivy received the medical care, nutrition, and love she desperately needed. She has completely bounced back and truly flourished — she looks like a completely different cat now. We initially believed Ivy was a senior due to her condition, but she is actually a young lady with the sweetest and most laidback personality.

A family reached out to us after an accidental litter of 10 pittie puppies became overwhelming for them to care for. They wanted the best for the puppies but could not afford to spay and neuter the parents. Through our low-cost spay and neuter program, we helped cover both parents’ surgeries to prevent future unwanted litters. The puppies were surrendered into our care, where we were able to carefully place each one into loving homes. By stepping in, we not only helped prevent this from happening again, but also ensured the puppies were safely rehomed and protected from ending up in the wrong hands.

Sandy the Shih Tzu was surrendered to us after her owner sadly passed away. Family relatives tried their best to care for Sandy and her sibling but eventually became overwhelmed. The pair had never been spayed or neutered and had accidental litters in the past. When they arrived, they were filthy, severely matted, and you could barely see their eyes. Sandy also had little experience outside the home and did not know how to properly walk outdoors or use stairs. After receiving veterinary care, grooming, and lots of patience, both dogs found wonderful forever homes. Sandy now lives spoiled and loved by a family who understands her, and she happily runs endless laps with her new canine sibling.
